About Barefoot Beach Preserve

Barefoot Beach Preserve is located along the Gulf Coast of Florida in Collier County, near the city of Bonita Springs. It protects one of the last remaining undeveloped barrier islands on the southwest coast of Florida. The preserve encompasses over 200 acres of beaches, coastal dunes, maritime hammocks, and mangrove swamps, providing vital habitat for a wide variety of native wildlife including the gopher tortoise, shorebirds, and several endangered species. The undeveloped beach is an ideal spot for shell collecting, bird watching, and quiet relaxation away from busy tourist areas. Historically, the island was home to the Calusa, an indigenous group that thrived in the region. Today, visitors can walk along sandy trails that wind through natural landscapes, spot nesting sea turtles during certain times of the year, and enjoy kayaking or paddleboarding in nearby estuaries. The preserve is managed by Collier County and emphasizes minimal development to maintain its natural state. Facilities include a small visitor center with educational exhibits and restrooms, but visitors should prepare for a natural experience without concessions or abundance of amenities. Barefoot Beach Preserve appeals to outdoor lovers seeking a peaceful coastal retreat with excellent opportunities for observing Florida’s coastal ecology and enjoying a quiet beach environment.
